Success! On Tuesday, 11/27 at 17.00 hrs the Upper Church was illuminated. Even up to 13.00 it was unclear whether the event would be moved to another date. The weather was unpredictable, the fog hovered just above the town and we did not want to disappoint any of the invited guests, most of whom had traveled to Štiavnica from other parts of Slovakia.

But we decided to rely on providence and the proceed with the inauguration of the floodlighting. And we succeeded!

The event began with a symbolic „closing of the chapels“ at Calvary, so we completed the 2012 season and entered the winter season, a time to focus on writing projects, licensing arrangements and other administrative work, for which time is short during the rest of the year.

People began to gather on Sladkovicova street well before 17.00. After the ceremonial speeches of the President of the Calvary Fund Macharik Martin, Mrs. Mayor Mgr. Nadezda Babjaková, priest Milos Pikala and of course the Deputy Secretary sponsor of electrification of the SSE electric company, Mr. Jaroslav Hanzel, we threw the switch for the lights of the Upper Church, to the applause of all.

As a demonstration of what will follow, maybe as early as next year, we are using makeshift temporary lighting for the additional 5 chapels below the upper church.

We believe that the nightly illumination of Slovakia’s most important Calvary will be a further incentive not only to restore the religious and cultural life on Calvary itself, but also contribute to increasing the attractiveness of the city itself and the development of tourism in the region.
