The altars in the side chapels of the Lower church

24 máj 2011
The altars in the side chapels of the Lower church

Fragments of the original Baroque altars in chapel 4 and chapel 6 have been preserved, statues of angels and sculpture of Christ lying in the tomb, of Pieta and Maria Magdalena have been stolen. The main sections of the altars were preserved, but were in very poor condition – they had suffered from attacks by woodworms, and many parts were broken and strewn on the floor of the church to be found in 2008.

The altars required acute restoration treatment, with the addition of missing angels and other details, restoration painting and gilding. After the restoration the altars were installed in the restored chapel space. A copy ofthe statue of Mary Magdalen and Jesus in the tomb was also installed. Sculptures of Pieta and angels are still waiting for donors and restoration.
