Restoration of facades of the Lower church

12 máj 2011
Restoration of facades of the Lower church

The facade had significantly damaged plaster, especially at the base, and was eroded. Restoration research has shown that the original baroque plaster is preserved only in fragments, and that the minimal cement plaster facade composition was causing rare baroque frescoes in the interior of the church to become water damaged. Therefore, in 2009 restoration began with full removal of the cement plaster.

Restoration follows the baroque style of the church highlighting the architecture of the pillars, plinths and attic restoration including stucco balustrades. The next stage of the project will see reconstruction of the original stone sculptures (probably the statue of St. Peter and Paul) and the obelisks, which were originally placed on top of the stone parapet between the three towers.

Realised in 2009 – 2012.
