2016 at the Calvary was eventful

2016 was the ninth year of renovation work on Calvary. It was the year when traffic grew again – exposition was visited by over 23,000 people and total area of at least 55,000 visitors.

Due to the ever increasing traffic, in 2015 we purchased the site of the former municipal forests that we have in the first half of 2016 comprehensively rebuilt on a new visitor center. From august 2016 Calvary thus gained a new exhibition, enhanced by the „Jesuits in Banská Å tiavnica“, a lecture room, shops, restaurant, a large garden and 25 parking places.

In 2016, we completed restoration of the biggest chapel „Dungeon“ – Ecce Homo, which was difficult because of poor static situation and also due to the distance of the object from the access road. We gradually remodeled all stone and stucco components, replaced the roof and part of the roof, restored interior plaster and paintings, completely restored outside façade, carried out the remediation of moisture, restoring floors, entrance doors and grilles, also the door to the second floor. We also completed the restoration of the other two chapels and two other chapels began to restore.

In 2016, we have restored a large fresco was restored in the Upper church the third year. Work carried team of authors led by Mgr. Art. Ján Hromada. Historic event was the visit of the President of Slovakia Mr. Andrej Kiska.

In March 2016, we borrowed three originals reliefs from chapels to the exhibition „Restituzioni“ in the Gallery of Italia in Milan, where our originals were in the company of important works of art (from Roman monuments after Caravaggio). Transport and export of such works was exceptional logistical and administrative exam.

Again, in early May, the Feast of the Cross with the presence of many believers took place in the Lower church. This tradition was renewed for the first time in 2012 and becomes a regular event which also opens the season at Calvary.

During the summer and off-season weekends the Calvary exhition in the Lower Church has been open. Its operation was possible thanks to the volunteers who take care of Calvary through an annual project by the EU’s Erasmus+.

We would like to thank all who participated in the reconstruction on Calvary. Thanks to their efforts and not insignificant regular support from VUB Foundation, Midd-Slovakia energy and other supporters we believe that in 2017 we will be able to move the work further.
